Testers get the new build, not last week's
Team
Emails about new builds get buried, and chat links scroll away. Testers keep using the build they have and report bugs you already fixed.
Every invited tester has a page with the builds shared with them. Added to the home screen, it works like an app: one tap opens their newest builds, and a notification arrives when you share a new one.
Example
Lina's phone
- NotificationNew build of Shop App
- Shop AppAndroid 2.5, iOS 2.5
- Client portaliOS 1.8
Made for
- Teams with a steady group of testers or client reviewers
- Agencies whose clients test on their own phones
- Android and iPhone testers who should not need a store app to test
What it ends
- Testers digging through email for the latest link
- Bug reports against builds that are already fixed
- Asking testers to install yet another app from a store
How it works
Step 1
Invite testers
Add testers or a tester group to a private project. Each gets an emailed link to their own page, no account needed.
Step 2
They add it to the home screen
Chrome on Android offers Add to home screen. On iPhone, Safari's Share menu has Add to Home Screen. The page opens signed in from there.
Step 3
They turn on notifications
One tap on Notify me about new builds. When you share a new build, the notification opens its install page.
On iPhone
Notifications from a web app need iOS 16.4 or newer and the page opened from the home screen. iPhone keeps a separate sign in for home screen apps, so the page installs with a signed start address and opens signed in for up to 180 days. Ad hoc iOS builds still need the tester's device in your provisioning profile.
You still see who is behind
Tester status shows who opened the link, who is on an older build and who has the newest, and you can remind the ones behind. The email about each new build is still sent; the notification comes next to it.
Good to know
- It is an installable web page, not a native app from the App Store or Google Play.
- Notifications work on appforshare.io, not on a custom domain. Emails still work there.
- Testers who block notifications for the site have to allow them again in their browser or phone settings.
Questions
- Do testers need an AppForShare account?
- No. The emailed link proves their address, and the page shows only what is shared with it.
- What if a tester changes phones?
- They open the emailed link on the new phone, or ask for a new one from any install page.
- Which plan do I need?
- Team, together with tester groups and private projects.
