AppForShare in ChatGPT: Custom GPT Actions and MCP
Ask ChatGPT for the newest build and its install link, the store readiness check, who installed a build or what testers reported, and it answers from your AppForShare account. There are two ways in: a Custom GPT with an Action made from our OpenAPI file and an API token, or the hosted MCP server in ChatGPT developer mode. Pro and Team.
GPT Action file: https://appforshare.io/api/ci/openapi.json?for=gpt
Full OpenAPI file: https://appforshare.io/api/ci/openapi.json (OpenAPI 3.1, every CI API route)
Auth: API Key, Auth Type Bearer, with a token from Settings
Custom GPT with an Action
1. Make an API token
In AppForShare open Dashboard, Settings, API tokens and make a token (Pro and Team). The token can do what you can do in that workspace, with your role. For a GPT that only reads, make the token from an account with the Viewer role.
2. Create the GPT
On chatgpt.com open GPTs, press Create and go to the Configure tab. Give it a name, such as AppForShare builds, and a short instruction, for example: "Answer questions about our test builds with the AppForShare actions. Ask before you change anything."
3. Import the Action
Under Actions press Create new action, then Import from URL, and paste the address below. It is the GPT version of the file: the calls people ask for in a chat, with short descriptions. ChatGPT lists them under Available actions.
https://appforshare.io/api/ci/openapi.json?for=gpt4. Add the token
Next to Authentication press the gear, pick API Key, set Auth Type to Bearer, paste the token and save. Set the privacy policy to https://appforshare.io/privacy.
5. Keep it to yourself
Under Share, keep the GPT on Only me (or your workspace, if every member may use your token). Anyone who uses the GPT acts with the token you pasted. For a team where each person signs in with their own account, use the MCP server below instead.
Things to ask
- What is the install link of the newest Android build of com.example.shop?
- Is build 2.4.0 (41) ready for the store? What should I fix first?
- Who installed the latest iOS beta, and from which countries?
- Show the open tester feedback on the newest build.
- Pause the link of build Stw0Ae. (ChatGPT asks you before it runs a call that changes something.)
Hosted MCP server in ChatGPT developer mode
On plans with developer mode, add AppForShare as an app: open Settings, Apps and Connectors, Advanced settings, turn on Developer mode, then Create, paste https://appforshare.io/api/mcp and keep Authentication on OAuth. Each person signs in with their own account and picks a workspace, and there is no token to paste. The MCP server guide has the steps and the full tool list.
Questions
- Which plan do I need?
- API tokens come with Pro and Team, so the Action works on those plans. Calls that need Team, such as testers, groups and activity, answer with an upgrade message on Pro.
- What is the difference between the GPT file and the full file?
- https://appforshare.io/api/ci/openapi.json?for=gpt has the calls that make sense in a chat: account, projects, builds, installs, links, feedback, releases, GitHub runs, plus a few changes such as emailing the link, pausing a link, moving a build to a channel and retiring it. https://appforshare.io/api/ci/openapi.json describes every CI API route, including the resumable upload, which sends raw file bytes that a GPT cannot send.
- Does ChatGPT ask before it changes something?
- Calls that change data are marked as consequential in the file, so ChatGPT asks you each time before it runs them. Deleting builds and access codes is not in the GPT file at all.
- Should I use the MCP server or a Custom GPT?
- The MCP server is the better fit when your ChatGPT plan has developer mode: each person signs in with their own AppForShare account and picks a workspace, nothing to paste, and it has more tools. A Custom GPT works on plans without developer mode and is easy to share with yourself on any device, but it uses one token.
- Can I use the OpenAPI file in Postman, Zapier, Make or n8n?
- Yes. Import https://appforshare.io/api/ci/openapi.json into Postman, or use it to fill an HTTP request in Zapier (Webhooks by Zapier), Make or n8n. Send the token as Authorization: Bearer afs_... in each call.
- How do I stop the GPT?
- Revoke the token under Settings, API tokens. Every call made with it stops at once.
Every call is described in the CI API reference. Prefer commands? See the CLI and CI guide.
